Over the last few years, we kept hearing the same conversations from families across Nottingham and Nottinghamshire:
“My child used to love learning.”
“They’re bright, but school just isn’t working anymore.”
“They come home exhausted.”
“They’ve completely lost confidence.”
Some parents spoke about school anxiety. Others mentioned burnout, overwhelm, or the feeling that their child had disappeared into a system that simply wasn’t designed for them.
And honestly—we understood. Because we could see it too.
A Growing Problem for Many Young People
Not every child struggles in school. Many thrive. There are incredible teachers across Nottingham doing amazing work under pressure.
But alongside that, we kept meeting young people who were creative, thoughtful, capable and full of potential—yet slowly becoming disconnected from learning.
Some stopped drawing. Some dreaded mornings. Some were doing “fine” academically but felt completely uninspired.
Others simply needed more creativity, more movement, smaller learning environments, or a stronger connection to real-world learning.
That gap is exactly why Macademia exists.
The Missing Middle in Nottingham’s Education System
When we looked at education options in Nottingham, we noticed two extremes. On one side, traditional schools managing large classes, pressure and limited flexibility. On the other, tutoring centres and clubs that can be useful, but often feel disconnected from real-world learning or long-term development.
What felt missing was the middle space. A place where young people could learn seriously, but still feel calm, supported and engaged. Somewhere that offered structure without pressure, creativity without chaos, and learning that felt meaningful.
Macademia was built to be that space.
Who Created Macademia?
Macademia was created by Adriana Clark and Natalie Unthank, two long-standing friends with very different but complementary backgrounds.
Adriana comes from a background in architecture, design and creative education, with years of experience helping students build portfolios and confidence through hands-on learning.
Natalie brings structure, leadership and safeguarding experience, shaped by 15 years in the British Army and later leadership roles in the creative sector.
Together, that balance shapes the environment at Macademia.
Families often notice it immediately. The atmosphere is calm, friendly and focused—but relaxed. That is very intentional.
Built From Real-Life Experience
Macademia is also shaped by real-life experience with neurodiversity, anxiety and children who do not fit neatly into traditional systems.
That’s why the approach includes smaller groups, flexible structures, a balance between creativity and routine, and a strong emphasis on how tutors communicate with students.
Because often, children don’t need fixing. They need the right environment.
A Different Kind of Learning Environment
We never wanted to create “just another club,” and we definitely didn’t want silent classrooms filled with worksheets.
We wanted something closer to a creative learning studio.
A place where architecture sits alongside engineering, where fashion connects with interiors, and where young people explore real careers in a practical, meaningful way.
A place where students feel comfortable asking questions, experimenting, making mistakes and developing their own ideas.
Because not every child learns by memorising under pressure. Some learn by building, some by discussing, some by creating, and some by doing.
Why Small Group Learning Makes a Big Difference
One of the biggest transformations we see comes from smaller group learning.
Students who were quiet begin to share ideas. Teenagers who were anxious begin to relax. Friendships form naturally. Tutors can actually adapt to individuals rather than managing large groups.
And perhaps most importantly, learning becomes enjoyable again.
Connecting Young People to Real Careers
Nottingham is full of creativity, industry and opportunity—from architecture practices and engineering firms to healthcare, design studios and independent businesses.
But many young people don’t get meaningful exposure to these worlds until much later.
At Macademia, we bring these industries closer through hands-on projects, creative workshops and real-world discussions.
Sometimes a student discovers an interest in architecture or design simply because they were finally given the chance to try it properly. That matters.
Education Is Changing in the UK
Education across the UK is changing. More families are exploring home education, alternative education and flexible learning pathways.
Parents are asking bigger questions—not just about grades, but about confidence, wellbeing and long-term development.
There is no single perfect route for every child. But every young person deserves to feel supported, inspired and understood.
Why Macademia Exists
At its core, Macademia exists to give young people an environment where they can truly thrive.
Not every student needs a completely different system.
Sometimes they just need a smaller space, a calmer environment, a more creative approach, and someone who understands how they learn.
And when that happens, everything can change.
